Hi, Karen, as that elevator has been smelling like burnt rubber for a long tome now. CSLA does not do preventative maintenance on its infrastructure so the eventual breakdowns are major repair jobs.I have complained to OSHA but no one seems to care about disabled students not having access, except for the Office for Students with Disabilities. I am ccing this email to Tomas Vaquez, the diligent director of the OSD, hoping that CLSA will perform basic maintenance on the physical plant: #1 There is a special elevator for handicapped peoples in the Music Building but no one seems to have a key to unlock the door to this elevator; #2 There are gaping holes in the Music Building that expose the inner workings, including asbestos-type insulation, which lay open for months; #3 The servo-assisted handicapped doors are dysfunctional, most of the time; #4 Some doors do not even have handicapped access buttons to actuate the doors; #5 There are obvious signs of neglect such as the first floor smoke detector warning low-batter buzzer, which has been making warnings for months now; #6 The bathrooms are filthy and often trash/garbage/old food and pizza boxes pile up in the corridors for days on end; #7 No CSLA administrator seems to care or be in charge of ameliorating these health and safety violations.
Hopefully, CSLA Office for Students with Disabilities Director Tomas Vasquez will do something about these health and safety violations as he is certainly a compassionate, intelligent and dedicated administrator. Gonzalo of the OSD is also a high calibre disability manager and I think that his personal evaluation of this situation in the CSLA Music Building would define the parameters for necessary change.
If this happens again, Karen, please call me at 323 365-5433 and we'll summon some able-bodied, younger students to carry you into the Music Building by the library-side (the south side of the Music Building) because the rise there is less critical and there are fewer steps. It is your civil right to have unimpeded access to your academic progress. That is both State and Federal statute.
